By Airmail with Frilly and Funkie

Hi everyone and welcome. Over at the Frilly and Funkie Challenge blog we are at the beginning of a new challenge, 'By Airmail'. I'm hosting this challenge on behalf of my DT team mate Zoe Hillman. "She just loves sending and receiving letters in the mail. And especially love the stamps, airmail stickers and postmarks that these letters pick up along the way. So for this challenge, create a vintage or shabby chic postal themed project. Think old fashioned aircraft, airmail stamps, post marks, postage stamps."

As ever, the Design Team will choose their top four picks, with the winner being invited to join us in a Guest DT spot at Frilly and Funkie and the next three will receive Top 3 badges to display on their blogs. Everyone who enters and follows the rules will be entered into the draw to have the chance to win a $25 spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique.

By Airmail Fathers Day Card

Now I know Father's Day has been and gone but the card I made for my Dad really fitted in so well with this theme that I figured it would be a good one to share. It has a brayered/layered background incorporating Dina Wakley Media acrylic paints in shades of Night and White, paper from Tim Holtz Paper Stash 'Correspondence' and 'Etcetera' collections and a touch of Walnut Stain Distress Oxide Ink to give it a vintage look.

The Close Ups

Now here's a couple of close ups so you can see the finished layers in more detail. You can see from these the embossed stamping using Tim Holtz 'Purveyor' stamp set combined with Wendy Vecchi's 'Tree Branch' Embossing Powder. There's stencilling with Ranger Opaque Texture Paste through Tim Holtz 'Chevron' Layering Stencil to create arrows that have been over painted with Fired Brick and Faded Jeans Distress Oxide Inks and Picket Fence Distress Ink. The various Tim Holtz Remnant Rubs come from the 'Special Delivery' set and the postcard under the Paper Doll has been stamped with the text image from Tim Holtz 'Entemology' stamp set. Final flourishes include an altered Index Clip and Adornment Star with die cut lettering;

That's it for my airmail themed card for the current Frilly and Funkie challenge. My talented team mates have created lots more amazing projects for this challenge so make sure you hop on over and check them out HERE. And remember to link up your own shabby chic or vintage lace projects to be in with a chance of winning one of the fabulous prizes.

Take care of yourselves and get creative!

Eileen Hull Designs Faux Suede 'Wrapped Journal'

Hi everyone and welcome. So the time has arrived; the long awaited and anticipated Eileen Hull Designs 'Wrapped Journal' Scoreboards XL Die has arrived in stores! It feels like a lifetime ago that Eileen's Inspiration Team were creating samples to share at the Creativation show in Phoenix. And now, all these months later, the team are finally sharing those samples with you over on Eileen Hull's website. Let's take a more in depth look at the first of three that were made for the show - you may also have spotted it very briefly on Sharon Curtis's Hochanda show for Sizzix on June 16th.

The Faux Suede 'Wrapped Journal' Cover

When Eileen sent us some cuts of the Wrapped Journal back in December 2017 she also included a beautiful piece of faux suede fabric with a black embossed pattern. Keen to make use of it I painted the journal cover black before gluing the fabric in place around the outside. To imitate the look of an old leather belt I cut a strip of grungeboard and soaked it in Walnut Stain Distress Ink before punching holes and adding a buckle. Now let's dive on inside.

The Tim Holtz 'Memoranda' Collage Journal Pages

The pages inside were cut from black card, scored on one side so that they could be hinged to the spine rather than hooked in with elastic. I will do a video tutorial for this next month to explain it in more detail. Each page and the inside covers had Tim Holtz 'Memoranda' Paper Stash added (with stitching around the edges) to provide the basis for each mini collage, all based on the theme of love.

You'll spot on the first inside cover the words LOVE and JOURNAL, both of which are included in Eileen's new Thinlits die set 'Journaling Words'. And the little red hearts come from yet another of her new Thinlits die set 'Journaling Cards, Hearts'. Throughout the journal you'll also see that I've included embroidery thread stitching using two older Thinlits die sets from Eileen, 'Border Stitchlits' and 'Chevron Stitchlits'.

Tim Holtz' Photo Booth pictures helped to build the 'story' on each page with the addition of his Mirrored Hearts and Clippings Stickers. I also added snippets of fabric and lace from my stash to add extra texture to the layers of paper in each collage. Here are the remaining pages (click on each one for a closer look);

I hope you've enjoyed today's flick through of this journal. Please do make sure you head over to Eileen Hull's website to see what my hugely talented team mates have created - there's so much eye candy you are bound to feel inspired! And if you missed yesterday's post on my blog you'll see another Wrapped Journal featuring stamps and stencils from AALL & Create HERE.

I'll be back again tomorrow with my latest Frilly and Funkie DT project for the current 'By Airmail' challenge so I hope you can join me for that.
For now take care of yourselves and get creative!

AALL & Create - Patches by Olga Heldwein

Hi everyone and welcome. Today I have a new project to share with you using stamps and stencils from AALL & Create and Eileen Hull's new Wrapped Journal from Sizzix. They really do make the perfect partners.

Patches by Olga Heldwein

I made a start on this Wrapped Journal at my recent workshop, using Cheddar, Sedona and Turquoise shades of Dina Wakley Media paint to get the initial blended effect. On returning home I added extra white dry brushing, torn painted paper and some of Dina's Washi Tape. At that point it was time to add that all important stamping and stencilling.

I love the combination of linear and circular patterns in the 'Patches' stamp set. For this journal the spherical images were emphasised by re-stamping them on paper painted in a contrasting colour, ready for cutting and layering over the originals. This was combined with stencilling using one of Autour de Mwa's designs. The word Art is also part of the set. I stamped it first directly onto the cover embossing it with white embossing powder. It was then stamped on tissue using black ink so it could be applied over the top with Distress Collage Medium Matte. The addition of a little white ink on the filmstrip lines and inside the word helped make them pop even more.

The closure for this journal was kept simple with a band of coloured elastic joined with twists of wire in an elongated bead shape. By using the same paints on extra paper I was able to create covers for the booklets inside the journal, having been inspired by seeing the amazing Carolyn Lakin do the same at my workshop. The images were stamped again, this time with Garden Patina Archival Ink and contrasting stitching was added around the edges.

Close Ups

Here are some close ups of the finished journal and matching notebooks inside;

You can purchase Olga's stamp set 'Patches' and Autour de Mwa's stencil from AALL & Create HERE and it's also available from many of your favourite retailers across the World (listed on the same page).

Hopefully I've given you more ideas for using the Patches stamp set and Autour de Mwa's stencil. Make sure you check out the AALL& Create page on Facebook to see lots more inspiration from a host of hugely talented designers.

That's it from me for today. Take care of yourselves and get creative!

Tim Holtz Collage Mini Book

Hi everyone and welcome. I'm back with you today to share a new handmade book, created with lots of favourite Tim Holtz goodies. It's a vintage style pocket sized book containing a mix of blank journaling pages and others filled with stamping and collage elements.

The Cover

Let's begin with the cover, which is built around Tim's Baseboards Frames and a fabric sandwich embossed with his new 'Botanical' 3D Texture Fades Embossing Folder.

Here's a close up of the detail on the front cover, a collection of Tim's Funky Floral die cuts, Botanical Layers, and an altered Adornment Butterfly.

The Video Flip Through and Tutorial

I've already had lots of question about how the cover was created, so here's a video sharing my 'how to's for the whole book and a flip through inside;

The Collage Pages

Now as promised in the video here are some photos showing the collage pages in more detail;

So there you have it! I hope you've enjoyed seeing and finding out more about this little book. Hopefully you now feel the need to use some of these ideas for your own projects. I think I've covered everything but if you do have any questions please just leave a comment below.

I'm entering this into the Mini Album Makers Challenge - June 2018
