Layer it up! for Frilly and Funkie

Hi everyone and welcome. It's Nancy's turn to host the current Frilly and Funkie challenge, the theme this time being 'Layer it Up!'. For this one you simply need to make a vintage or shabby chic project that includes multiple layers - how easy is that!!!

The winner will earn the chance of a Guest DT spot over at Frilly and Funkie, and everyone who enters and follows the rules will go into the draw for the chance to win a $25 spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique. And there are Top 3 Badges for three further outstanding entries, chosen by the Design Team, because choosing just one winner is so hard!

It's another of my 'Wendy Vecchi play session' creations and I think it qualifies as layered and vintage!!!...

(click on each image for a closer look)

So this is very much my old style of creating, with pre-stamped layers inked up and cut to fit a 6" square card. I love the mix of Vintage Mesh and Lots of Dots with Gold Embossing Paste in the background acting as a foil for the Botanical Register. You might notice it looks a little smudged - that's deliberate! I had a piece of card stamped in Jet Black Archival ink with this design and wanted it to look truly aged and worn, so a quick dip in a mix of Potting Soil Re-Inker and Surgical Spirit (Rubbing Alcohol) and it was good to go. Another trick to add to this look involves scrunching the corners and scraping at the edges before blending in some Walnut Stain Distress ink.

Then more layers: a vellum embossed Tim Holtz Doily; die cut and Venise Lace; ribbon (love that you can 'mould' the check May Arts ribbon because it has wired edges); and a tag with the bunch of violets from the Blooming Art set - I cut the tag into the stamped image using an old Sue Wilson die cutting trick before water colouring it with Wilted Violet (of course!) and Mowed Lawn Distress inks. There's an undetectable layer of Glossy Accents over the flowers to allow for a mist of Old Paper Distress Spray Stain on the tag. Remnant Rub butterflies were applied along with the tiny tag to finish.

There are lots of layers to this but it has remained remarkably flat! And I had great fun putting it all together. It's definitely worth checking out Wendy Vecchi's new releases as there are so many clever elements that will become timeless classics in your crafty stash.

I'm entering this into the following challenge;
Butterfly Challenge #49 - Butterflies + is for Glitter and/or Grape
The Sisterhood of Crafters - Think Spring
Card and Scrap Challenge #113 - Shabby Chic/Vintage
Live & Love Crafts Challenge #45 - Signs of Spring
We Love Vintage Challenge #64 - Vintage Spring

Now it's time to hop on over to Frilly and Funkie to see what my talented teamies have been up to (they never fail to amaze me) and then we need to see your own layered creations linked to the challenge so you can be in with a chance of winning. Good luck everyone!

I'm back this Friday at Frilly and Funkie with a focus on... ah ha! Not tellin' yet! More playtime and experimentation, more new (to me) stuff, more ideas, tips and techniques shared. Hope you can join me for that. Then I'm teaching a floral canvas workshop at Daisy's Jewels and Crafts, Coventry on Saturday and would love to see you there (find the details HERE).

Phew! Whatever you're up to this weekend take care of yourselves, Jenny xxx

  2. So many scrumptious layers here, Jenny...and so many wonderful techniques! I love the aged text layer....just so perfectly antique. And violets are my favorite springtime bloom from childhood. The background panel is gloriously textured, and you chose the perfect sentiment to pull it all together. Voila! It's magical!

  13. Hello Jenny I am now following your blog. I arrived here in a rather roundabout fashion. I was looking up old Our creative Corner challenges in order to enter their new challenge and found your beautiful bird creation that you had done from A Nice Crane picture for the Three colour challenge (without using black lines). I then fast forwarded to your current post here and so glad I did. I love butterflies and your card fits my current Butterfly Challenge #49 Butterflies +Glitter and/or the colour Grape. Do hope you will join in . Hugs Mrs A.
