Hi everyone. We are entering the second week of the latest challenge over at Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog. Our host, Cec, wants to see projects in red, pink and white with no hearts. So here goes...
Now you know what it's like, when you are told you can't use something there is this overwhelming desire to use it! So it was with the ban on hearts. How do you create a Valentine's project without them?! Time to think about all the other things that are associated with love, including the word itself and of course flowers.
I went with a vintage style background to get the ideas flowing, cutting an aperture in the base paper to show the flip side (softened with gesso and stamped/embossed with the gorgeous Wendy Vecchi 'Vintage Mesh'). The sewing around the oval edge was done by hand as I needed to go through several thick layers.
The new Sizzix greenery dies are already a favourite, and teaming them with Kraft Core Coredinations is perfect for any vintage project. The little flowers are cut from crinoline and coloured with Distress Stains. Do you like their gem centres? They were cut from a fabulous Prima border strip to add the smallest touch of bling.
It was fun adding some slightly more grungy layers underneath the flowers with Distress Stain splats and Archival flourish stamping. And it occurred to me that X's and O's are always fun to add to this theme.
Linda sells the most beautiful metal butterflies and they are so easy to alter with Alcohol Inks and/or Distress Paints. Rather than leave this one at that stage I rubbed it back with some wire wool to reveal the brass colour underneath.
So that's how I tackled this theme, and my DT team mates have lots more ideas for you over at the Frilly and Funkie Challenge Blog. I highly recommend you take a look before getting started on this theme as it will really get your creative juices flowing. And remember, if you enter this challenge you are in with a chance of winning a Guest Designer spot or a shopping spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique. What are you waiting for!
Thanks so much for joining me and a special thank you to all those who take the time to leave comments. They are very much appreciated.
Take care of yourselves, Jenny x

Your heartless Valentine came out beautiful, Jenny. I love the layered aperture (so hard to do!) with the Vintage Mesh stamp behind it. (I just reordered that stamp and am taking one for myself before I restock the store:) Great flower cluster and that altered butterfly is drop-dead gorgeous!

It's amazing how the brain processes a negative isn't it? But you did a great job managing without a heart to be seen, a wonderful design and construction as always xx
ReplyDeleteJenny...once again you've created such a lovely vintage card! Love the papers you've used. You've really done a superb job with coordinating papers and colors. The Kraft Core paper that you've distressed makes for beautiful die cut trims and foliage. Love the stripe on the front of the card and the machine stitching around the oval cut out. Wendy's mesh in the background of the oval really pops...love that! And that butterfly...gorgeous! <3 Candy
