Handy Scrapholder for Eileen Hull Designs

Hi everyone and welcome. This month Eileen Hull's Inspiration Team have been sharing more projects, ideas and inspiration using her latest dies - the Gift Box and Display Stand - over on her website. Whilst not as decorative as previous projects, the one I have to share today is a practical solution for holding those little scraps and leftovers that you can't bear to bin (because they may come in useful one day!) Combining the new Display Stand with the hugely popular Pocket Notebook, here is my idea for a scrapholder for your desk;

Tied together with ribbon at the top, it stands up by itself and when untied, the pockets have room to expand and hold even more bits and pieces. In essence it's one of those expanding file folders but in a smaller, desk friendly size. Here's how it came together;

I have a collection of small old books found in charity shops and love to use the pages for mixed media projects, but often the covers are just as beautiful and equally as useful. When looking through the pile I found a worn red one with a sun bleached spine and a little embossing on the front. Being almost the same size as the Pocket Notebook it was perfect for the job in hand. I removed the covers with a sharp knife and set the text block and spine to one side. Die cutting two cover pieces from Matboard using the Pocket Journal die, I joined them at the spine creating the widest cover possible and covered the holes with spare strips of thin card.

Below you'll see the combination of paints and inks used to replicate the colour of the book, also added to a Matboard cut of the Display Stand. After painting both sections with Gold Rush and Red Lipstick Fresco Finish paint I rubbed red archival ink over the top. Then the surfaces were rubbed over with sandpaper to age them and reveal some of the Gold Rush paint. Finally I rubbed Walnut Stain Distress Oxide Ink over the stand, the notebook and the book covers.

With all the surfaces prepared it was time for assembly; the book covers were glued to the outside of the Pocket Notebook as shown below and ribbon was stuck onto the centre of the back cover. You may notice there's a tear in the surface of the spine (due to being a little too enthusiastic with the sandpaper!) This bit gets covered up next so doesn't matter.

I glued the back cover and spine of the Notebook to the front of the assembled Display Stand as shown below, holding it all in place with pegs until it was dry and secure. You'll be able to see that the ribbon is held securely in place by being sandwiched between the back cover and the stand.

To create the pockets inside the scrapholder I glued together ten C6 envelopes and chopped them off at the top so they would be four inches tall. After tea staining them all I added double-sided adhesive tape to the bottom at the centre of each envelope as shown below. Each envelope was stuck to the next to create a concertina effect. I then used wet glue to stick the front and back envelopes to the inside of the Pocket Notebook covers. This makes the pockets at the front and back narrower than the rest but also makes them more secure than if they were attached in one small strip.

Below are a couple more photos of the finished scrapholder. The first one shows it from the back where the stand section of the Display Stand can be seen holding the pockets and covers vertical.

This second photo shows the front cover which can fall forward when the ribbon is untied. The holder can be expanded or retracted (depending on how much you've crammed into it!)

Given a bit more time I may well create a panel to decorate and embellish the front of this scrapholder, but for now it works for the intended purpose and retains that look of an old book with 'pages' inside. Having checked the sizes you could recreate this project  with a smaller holder just by using the Notebook or Wrapped Journal dies too.

I hope this project has given you ideas for creating your own expanding storage using Eileen's dies. Make sure to check out what the rest of the team have made by visiting Eileen's website.

For now, thanks for visiting,

Leap into the Odd with The Funkie Junkie Boutique

Hi everyone and welcome. It's time for another challenge over at the The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog. Suzz is our host and she wants us to 'Leap into the Odd'.

"2020 is a leap year which means we will have an additional day in February ending on an odd number of days. The definition of odd is "different from what is usual or expected; strange." My challenge to you is to create something odd or unusual."

As ever, the Design Team will choose their top four picks, with the winner being invited to join us in a Guest DT spot at The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog and the next three will receive Top 3 Badges to display on their blogs. Everyone who enters and follows the rules will be entered into the draw to have the chance to win a $25 spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique.

Trying to think about something unusual to do I hit upon inspiration from Cathy Nichols and her amazing collages. Combining this style with an Eileen Hull Designs Gift Box (without the lid) I created an art box to hold colouring pens. My odd twist for this was to use what would normally be a focal image stamp to create backgrounds.

Here's how this art box came together; I die cut and stuck together the box, removing the lid section to make it into an open container. You'll also see die cut branches, all of which were painted with Black Gesso.

Next I picked out what was left of some papers created a year ago now using a Gel Plate and Dina Wakley Media Paints (see original post HERE). Cutting one sheet into 3 3/4 inch square pieces I glued one to the bottom of the box and saved four more for the sides and the basis of the collages.

Cutting 2 inch strips from three more of the colour coordinated papers, I used Wendy Vecchi's 'Bouquet' stamp (normally one I'd use for a main image) and repeat stamped/heat embossed them with white, gold and Tea Rose embossing powders.

You can see below how these strips were cut up and layered onto the background squares, with machine stitching added to enhance the edges. The squares were then glued onto the sides of the box in readiness for further decoration.

Those die cut branches were cut down and used as tree forms on each side with Gilt painted leaves added to mimic something of Cathy Nichols' style. As there was already a lot going on I kept the rest simple, stamping sentiments from Wendy Vecchi's 'Artful Thoughts' stamp set onto tissue with permanent black ink before using Distress Collage Medium to fix them in place over the embossed papers. Since this made those parts matte I added a gloss medium over the top to restore the shine of the embossing and enhance the papers.

Here are the other sides of the finished box;

That's my take on the theme 'Leap into the Odd'. My amazing team mates have also come up with some oddities for this challenge so make sure you hop on over and check out their gorgeous projects HERE. And remember to link up your own shabby chic or vintage projects to be in with a chance of winning one of the fabulous prizes that's up for grabs.

Love Is All Around Us at The Funkie Junkie Boutique

Hi everyone and welcome. It's time for another challenge over at the The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog and I'm the host for this one, 'Love Is All Around Us'. With Valentines Day approaching it's time to share a little love. Create something vintage or shabby chic featuring hearts. Here's a few ideas to get you started;

This coming Valentines Day promises to be a difficult one but I know that special someone in my life will be there by my side through it all. So for him I've put together a card to let him know just how much he is loved.

There's no tutorial for this one but here's a quick run down of how it came together. The base layer is a piece of copier paper that I brayered with 'Ruby', 'Carnation' and 'White' Dina Wakley Media Acrylic Paints. Over the top are strips from Wendy Vecchi's 'Washi Assortment 2' (love the way the hearts perfectly compliment the little dots on the larger strip) some machine stitching and stencilled hearts using Wendy's 'Never Enough Hearts' stencil. I traced the larger heart from this stencil onto a piece of card, painted it with more White Acrylic Paint, edged it with Wendy's 'Potting Soil' Blendable Dye Ink and mounted it onto the card base. The flower is one from Wendy's 'Delightful Art' stamp set; I used the coordinating Mat Minis for the flower and bud, stamping, painting and cutting out the leaves that sit behind them. Paints used to colour these include Dina Wakley's 'Ruby', 'Cheddar', 'Olive' and 'Lime' shades. A simple Wendy Vecchi phrase perfectly summed up what needed to be said on the front of this card. Here are a couple of close ups to show the finished card in more detail;

Repeat Performance for The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog

Hi everyone and welcome. It's time for another challenge over at the The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog with a new challenge. Sara Emily is our host and she's getting us playing a game of 'Repeat Performance'.

"A popular New Year's resolution is to save money. I challenge you to save money (and the environment) by using at least one thing you would normally throw out on your vintage or shabby chic project. Please be sure to let us know what that one (or more) item is."

Feeling in need of some positive affirmations I created a mini accordion book featuring some of the stamps, stencils and wise words of Wendy Vecchi. Measuring just 2 inches by 3 inches it may be small in stature but packs and punch and is perfectly portable too. I've put together a step by step below to show how it came together.

Start by cutting a 6 inch long piece of Distress Watercolor Cardstock and add torn strips of paper onto the smooth side (mine is some leftover tea stained copier paper). When secured in place use a brayer or spatula to apply a little White Gesso over the top in random patches. After this dries stamp Wendy Vecchi's background stamp 'Register' over the top using black permanent ink.

Dilute a little Peacock Acrylic Paint and brush in 'waves' over the dry ink/gesso. Allow this to dry.

Repeat the process with dilute Cheddar Acrylic Paint, this time working on different areas of the cardstock. Allow to dry.

Spritz the surface of the card with water before stamping Wendy Vecchi's background 'Wire with a Twist' on top using Eggplant Acrylic Paint, allowing the lines to bleed through the water. It doesn't matter if your stamping isn't perfect at this stage. When dry cut the card into two 3 inch strips horizontally.

I used the stencil from Wendy Vecchi's Stamp, Die, Stencil Set 'A Million Thanks' as it is the perfect size for cards, ATC's and other mini projects like this. Apply White Acrylic Paint through the stencil, repeating the pattern across the card.

I cut the strips into 2 inch wide pieces and stuck them onto a torn piece of calico, leaving a 1/4 inch gap between each piece to allow the accordion to fold over properly. For the first piece of recycling I used the edges of a used aluminium pie dish, die cutting them with one of the dies from the Tim Holtz 'Crochet' die set. These were added to the 'pages' as shown below.

For my second piece of recycling I used card from the myriad of packaging that is always left over after the Christmas festivities, adding some coordinating Design Tape and adding a little dilute Eggplant Acrylic Paint over the top to eliminate any obvious 'white lines' that might show. This was then die cut using dies from Tim Holtz 'Wildflowers' die sets.

After adding the flowers I machine stitched around the edges of each 'page' and then stamped, cut , inked and added sentiments from a number of Wendy Vecchi's stamp sets. Here are some close ups of the finished pages;

That's my take on the theme 'Repeat Performance' for the current The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog challenge. There is a little more to come with this one but for now that has to remain under wraps... For now my amazing team mates have also been on the hunt for things to reuse for this challenge so make sure you hop on over and check out their gorgeous projects HERE. Tic Tac Toe for The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog

Hi everyone and welcome. We are kicking things off over at the The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog for 2020 with a new challenge. Cec is our host and she's getting us playing  a game of 'Tic Tack Toe'.

"Let's play a game of Tic Tac Toe for this first challenge of the year. Choose any vertical, horizontal or diagonal line from the graphic below and create a vintage or shabby chic project using all three items on your chosen line. In addition to using all three items you must include a copy of the graphic in your post and tell us which line you chose."

For my DT project I have chosen the line 'Layers, Bling, Die Cuts' and played using Eileen Hull's brand new Gift Box.

Being as this is a new die, and wanting to show how I've used layers, bling and die cuts in my project I've put together a tutorial for you.

Start by using the die to cut two box sides with a lid flap and smaller scalloped piece. You also get a plaque piece that I didn't end up using on this project. Rather than paint both inside and outside of the box with Black Gesso I decided to cheat by placing the black side of the mount board face up when die cutting so that the inside was 'pre-coloured'. Alternatively you could use black chipboard to cut the pieces.

I assembled the box by gluing together the base and sides with wet glue.

After painting the outside of the box with Black Gesso stick lace trim around the bottom.

Glue together the lid flap and smaller scalloped piece, then paint with more Black Gesso.

Apply glue to one side of the lid piece (you can use strong tape if preferred).

Stick the lid piece onto the top of the box as shown below: you need to ensure that the scalloped piece fits on the outside of the box when the inner part tucks inside the box.

Cut flowers and leaves using the dies from the Tim Holtz 'Funky Floral, Large' set , layer them up and stick over the lace to add extra layers/pattern. Paint over the die cuts and lace with more Black Gesso.

Now to start with the paint layers - lightly brush first 'Marine', then 'Ocean' Dina Wakley Media Acrylic Paint over the raised areas. Ensure each layer is dry before applying a new colour and use less of the second than of the first.

Continue this process using the lighter shades of blue/green paint in Dina's range in increasingly smaller amounts, starting with 'Peacock', then 'Sky', then 'Turquoise' and finally 'White' to add the final highlights.

I applied Glossy Accents onto some of the lace before sprinkling Glass Glitter over it. As an alternative I would suggest using Distress Medium with Pam Bray's Rock Candy Embossing Powder as an alternative as when the medium is dry and the embossing powder has been heated it has a beautiful shine. I also added a few gems from my stash for some more 'bling' and coloured the centres of the flowers with a white pen.

Finally stamp moths from Tim Holtz 'Entomology' set from contrasting paper (I used some that had been printed using a Gel Press Plate and more of Dina Wakley's paints and backed it with black card). Cut out and bend into shape before gluing onto the sides and top of the box.

Here are a few more photos of the finished Gift Box from different angles so you can see how it looks all the way round;

That's my take on the theme 'Tic, Tac, Toe' for the current The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog challenge.
