Haunted Halloween at Frilly and Funkie

Hi everyone and welcome. Over at the Frilly and Funkie Challenge blog we are half way through a new challenge, 'Haunted Halloween'. It's my turn to host again and it's time to get your freak on and go all out for Halloween. We want to see your ghouls and ghosts and things that go bump in the night. It's going to be spooktacular!!!

As ever, the Design Team will choose their top four picks, with the winner being invited to join us in a Guest DT spot at Frilly and Funkie and the next three will receive Top 3 badges to display on their blogs. Everyone who enters and follows the rules will be entered into the draw to have the chance to win a $25 spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique.

Halloween Vignette Box

I had in mind fairy stories and ghoulish tales when making this diorama (having immediately imagined a starry sky behind the trees when Tim Holtz first introduced his latest collection for Sizzix). Vignette Boxes are ideal for creating little scenes like this so for my Halloween make I used the largest in the set with lots of die cuts and the Haunted House image from Tim's stamp set of the same name.

This was so much fun to make and it was easy to get 'lost in the process' but this time I did remember to take photos at various stages to help explain how it came together.

The Tutorial

The Vignette Box was given coats of Walnut Stain, Chipped Sapphire and Picket Fence Distress Paint; I wiped away the excess to expose some of the wood grain beneath to achieve a weathered look. The edges of the box were covered in Design Tape fixed in place with Distress Collage Medium Matte. After cutting a piece of Metallic Kraft Card to fit inside the box I painted a piece of Distress Mixed Media Heavystock the same size and covered it with Distress Paints to create a mottled grey look. I then used the Swirling Stars die set to cut a swirl of stars from this painted Heavystock before layering it over the Metallic background with dimensional tape. In this way when light shines on the scene you can see stars twinkling behind the trees.

Tim Holtz did a fantastic tutorial towards the end of his recent Facebook Live video altering Distress Woodgrain Cardstock with Distress Spray Stains and Distress Oxide Ink. Feeling inspired I used the same method to create alter the Woodgrain Cardstock used to die cut the trees, adding more dimensional tape to them before layering over the starry sky background.

To add even more interest to the sides outside of the Vignette Box I stamped the Tangled Webs images, first using Black Archival Ink (the shadow) then using Picket Fence Distress Paint, slightly offsetting the second layer so the first could still be seen.

Last year I did a tutorial showing how to stamp, paint and re-stamp the Haunted House image using the Stamp Platform. This time I added Wild Honey to the windows to add light and also stamped/painted the eagle on the signpost in the same way, both on Distress Watercolor Cardstock. A white pen was used to add highlights to both images where the moonlight would hit them. After cutting around the images dimensional tape was added to the back so they could be layered over the trees.

I die cut some of the new Funky Foliage pieces and the pumpkin from the Autumn Sidekick Sideorder, painting them with slightly diluted Distress Paints so the colours could blend with each other on the surface of the Distress Watercolor Cardstock. You'll notice I used a fine black pen to draw extra details on the toadstools so they would tie in more with the stamped images behind.

After adding the Funky Foliage to the scene I mixed Peeled Paint Distress Paint with Distress Grit Paste and applied it to the bottom of the Vignette Box. I added a little Clear Rock Candy Distress Glitter to the wet paste surface so that it would look like it was glistening in the moonlight.

With the final Funky Foliage in place at the bottom I added more branches to the top before fixing a Story Stick, Typed Token and charms from The Funkie Junkie Boutique in place with Distress Collage Medium Matte.

The Close Ups

Here are some close ups so you can see all of those finished layers in more detail;
